HONOUR IN THE ARTS FINALIST
Quinn Best
As owner of Lush Plush Mixed Media Productions and The Habitat, Quinn Best has been a vital part of Kelowna's art scene for several years, bringing in top quality acts and providing a venue for local talent to cut their teeth, but in 2010, he managed to put Kelowna on the musical map.
As chairman of the host committee for the 2010 Western Canadian Music Awards and the BreakOut West Music Festival as well as the production manager of the Peak Performance Project, Quinn helped bring the clubs and streets of downtown Kelowna to life in a way they have never seen before. It was estimated to have had a $1.8 million impact on the city as 70 bands performed over three nights in 10 downtown venues. Over 500 national and international delegates attended the conference portion of the event and there was even a Mini BreakOut West concert for families.
When Music B.C. needed office space, Quinn offered them a home at The Habitat and in 2010, the venue was awarded a Western Canadian Music award as one of the Top 3 Live Music Venues in Western Canada. It was also in the top 20 list created by CBC Radio 3.
On top of all this, Quinn still finds time to sit on the executive board of Festivals Kelowna and Downtown Kelowna Association as well.
TEEN HONOUR IN THE ARTS FINALIST
Grace Kim
Listening to Grace Kim play violin, you might think she was born with the instrument in one hand and the bow in the other but it wasn't until she moved from Korea to Medicine Hat at age 15 that she became serious about playing. Then, within one year, she shot through four grades of Royal Conservatory testing, from grade 4 to 9.
When Grace moved to Kelowna in 2007, she set out to play with as many orchestras as possible. She was soon made assistant concertmaster of the Youth Symphony of the Okanagan and the Night Owl Orchestra, and was offered a chance to play with the Okanagan Symphony Orchestra.
After graduating from KSS, Grace went on to UBC where she began studying music in September 2009, majoring in violin performance. In 2010, she played in the UBC's orchrestra performances, opera shows and in chamber music groups. A former violin teacher to kids a Glenmore Elementary, she continues to teach and tutor. During summer break last year, she joined the Okanagan Pops Orchestra and played the finale concert with Okanagan Symphony Orchestra.
